5 tips to get the most out of your meditation practice
A note on spirituality in leadership

EPISODE 1 Why be a Mindful Business Leader?

In this lesson I share a brief intro and the case for WHY becoming a mindful business leader is so critical right now. The guided meditation starts at 2:22
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES + INSPIRATION
  • Check out this article on John Mackay and Conscious Capitalism
  • Oprah's interview with John a touching story on his background and inspiration for Whole Foods.
  • Did you know that Harvard Business Review's global CEO ranking is not based not only on financial performance but also on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings? Check out the HBR 2019 Top 100 CEOs and read about their updated criteria
Who are the leaders that inspire you?
EPISODE NOTES
  • I’ll ask you to feel in for answers that may be new for some of you. This is a way to further the mind-body connection and strengthen your dialogue with yourself and distinguish the voice of the ego (which ain’t all bad!) and the voice of your “wiser self”. This is one of the most important tools you have as a Leader.

  • I’ll invite you to visualize light or simply bring your awareness to various places in your body. Some people feel a sense of “lightness”, or pressure; others just have a consciousness of the area. Go with what works for you, these are all “ways IN” to yourself. There's no "wrong" way in.

EPISODE 2 Find your Purpose

In this lesson I share what motivated me to start living my purpose and guide you on a meditation to connect with yours. The guided meditation starts at 2:38
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES + INSPIRATION: So what is this idea of leading SELFLESSLY?
  • The Bhagavad Gita, one of the most sacred Hindu philosophical texts written around 1000 B.C. has a lot of wisdom on this: "Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world; by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme goal in life. Do your work with the welfare of others in mind." [Chapter 3, Verse 19].
  • Author, activist and Professor Charles Eisenstein talks about "Life as a Gift". We didn't earn fresh air, we didn't earn our breath, nor the right to live. So naturally, we have a desire to give back. When we can share our gifts selflessly with the world, we are living our purpose.
How can you lead selflessly?

EPISODE NOTES
  • Hands to heart-belly space. This is a simple and easy way to feel your breath, feeling the movement of your hands as your belly / chest expand and contract. Make sure your shoulders and neck are relaxed.

  • We’ll continue with some visualization. Do the best you can and know that with practice visualizations become easier. Visualizing is an incredibly powerful tool for leaders.

  • As in the last episode I invited you to FEEL into answers, this time we'll FEEL into memories. Feeling a memory enables us to connect those beautiful memories in our brain to the sensations in our body, visualizing not only the details but feeling them, like we were there.

EPISODE 6 Keep the Wind in Your Sails

Our biggest challenge (you'd never guess it!) and how facing challenges as a leader builds resilience  Guided practice begins at 4:26
EPISODE NOTES
  • Emotion is "energy in motion".  The practice for today is a technique to release intense emotions (anger, stress, frustration, etc.).

  • After releasing the emotion, we are more able to feel into the lessons of that experience. Sometimes we're just not there yet so you may need to come back to the meditation at the end.

  • Every challenge is an opportunity, it's what we signed up for if you can believe it! Make sure to check out the reflection exercises.

EPISODE 7 Don't Get Seasick: Finding your Balance

Managing burnout and the importance of self-care. Guided practice begins at 5:13
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES + INSPIRATION:
  • Check out my time management tips for a leader (on the right / below) and the following meditation on what is essential, a great  practice to do when you're feeling overwhelmed to know where to start.

How do you take care of yourself as a leader?
EPISODE NOTES

  • If you give, give and give without taking time to recharge you will get empty and send your nervous system into "survival" mode (sympathetic "fight or flight" response).

  • One key way IN to the autonomic nervous and to stimulate parasympathetic "rest and digest" response is through touch, i.e. self-massage.

  • I show this practice with clothing but of course you can do this with oil after a bath or shower. This is a very powerful healing practice. If you use oil make sure it's pure, organic and non-toxic. Your skin is your largest organ.

EPISODE 9 Charting your Course: the Route Less Taken

Setting boundaries and staying connected to your wiser self + purpose as you move forward in your business. Guided Practice Pranayama with mudra (breathing technique with hand postures) starts at 6:06.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES + INSPIRATION:
  • The "Golden Thread" breathing practice I demonstrate is from Uma Dinsmore Tuli's book, "Yoni Shakti", a wealth of knowledge and information and highly recommended. Much of the book is available online by donation.

EPISODE NOTES

  • As you grow as a leader and in your business what does the future look like? How do you stay connected to your wiser self and purpose?

  • Setting expectations in your business on what kind of client / project / growth you WANT can materialize in the form of in clear terms of contracts and even in proposal materials.

  • This breathing technique is also incredibly powerful for anxiety and by simply exhaling smoothly through the mouth you're extending the exhale and encouraging a parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system response.

CLOSE Lead Selflessly + Stay Connected

Leading selflessly as you move forward life. Guided Practice of "Toning", i.e. using sound moving through the chakras starts at 4:41
Keep in Touch!
EPISODE NOTES

  • I hope this closing message motivates you to stay connected leading selflessly AND to start or re-start your daily practice

  • The toning exercise uses vowel sounds. There are many different perspectives on what vowel or sound goes with which chakra but this is how I learned it;-)

  • May you be healthy, may you be safe. May you be free from suffering and may you be a Mindful Business Leader!
