In an age of overstimulation, focusing on the essential can be elusive. I explore the intersection of conscious leadership, mindfulness + spirituality to enable overall health and wellbeing.

Mindful leader -> center yourself

Picture
The angry email from a colleague felt like a knife in my gut. We had disagreed on the best way to handle a difficult client situation and all I could focus on was every word of his scathing email and all the ways I would respond (and not the client problem).

As leaders we face challenges like everyone else, but how we handle them and conduct ourselves has a ripple effect on our team and business. It’s critical to stay centered but sometimes the rock that lands in our pond is so big the ripples throw us way off. Here are three ways to come back to your center, to lead mindfully.

1
Grounding

While sitting in your chair allow your feet to be flat on the ground. Relax your arms and shoulders and place your hands in your lap. Start to feel the chair underneath you. Feel the ground under your feet. Wiggle your toes a bit. Take a deep breath and feel that you’re sending your awareness down into the ground. With every exhale feel yourself softening a bit into the support of the chair and floor. Feel whatever intensity you’re experiencing flow out through your feet into the ground. Allow yourself to sit up tall but relax your feet, legs, belly, shoulders, jaw. Take a few more breaths here and allow yourself to ground down into the earth and recharge.

Why it works
If electricity isn’t grounded, there’s a chance for an electrical surge and a frying of your system. In the same way we can get “electric” with intense emotions. When we consciously feel the chair underneath us and the ground under our feet we are “grounding” this intense energy. Emotion is just “energy in motion” and the ability to send your attention down and relax the body allows your energy to ground and for you to find the center.

2
Orienting

Take a look around the room, slowly. Inhale, look to your right; notice the texture and color of what you’re seeing, notice what you smell or hear. Then slowly exhale as you move your head slowly and look to the left. Take in all that you’re seeing but stay focused on your breath. Just observe, no judging of what is good or bad, or what needs organizing or fixing. Just noticing. What do you hear? Inhale slowly turning toward the center and then looking up, noticing what’s above you. Then exhale, looking down noticing what you’re wearing, the texture and material of the floor. Continue in this way a few more breaths, looking around, orienting yourself to your space, taking in the sights, textures, smells and sounds as you anchor in your breath, and this present moment.

Why it works
The thalamus is the part of our brain that takes in sights, smells and sensory input and decodes them to signal safety or danger to our nervous system. When we automatically slam on the brakes before we realize we’ve nearly slammed into the car that just stopped in front of us for example, it’s the rapid-fire signal of the thalamus to the amygdala (fear center of the brain) that causes this swift response. That fear signal is so strong, however, that when we are stressed, whether it be an email, anxiety about the future or replaying the past, our nervous system reacts in the same way as if we were about to crash, and we go into fight or flight mode. Orienting calms the nervous system by using the senses to send signals of safety to our nervous system, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system response, i.e slowing down the heart-rate, releasing serotonin, relaxing the muscles and continuing digestion.

Hands to Heart-Belly

Sitting comfortably with feet on the ground or legs crossed, bring your left hand to the center of your chest and the right hand to your belly just above the belly button with shoulders relaxed and neck soft. Take a deep breath in and feel your chest rise and expand and as you exhale gently press your hand into your chest to expel the air completely out. On your next inhale breathe further down and maybe your belly expands with this deeper abdominal breath (if you don’t feel your belly expand just imagine your breath moving down and have the intention of expansion). As you exhale feel your belly soften and gently press the hand into your belly to feel a complete exhale. Take a few more breaths this way, alternating between feeling the chest and back of heart expanding, and then the belly and lower back. Breathing in and out through the nose if possible and then slowly start to lengthen the exhale, i.e. spend more time exhaling than inhaling.

Why it works
The autonomic nervous system is the part of our nervous system that controls automatic functions like our heartbeat, our body temperature, digestion and breathing. These things happen automatically in response to what’s happening around us; however, when we are stressed our body reacts just like it was under a serious physical threat. Breathing, is one of the ways we can access our autonomic nervous system and consciously activate a calming response. The other way is touch. When we place our hands on our chest and belly and consciously breathe into different places while feeling our breath, we are using two of the “ways in” to our nervous system to find balance. We are also stimulating the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to our heart, lungs and stomach and is responsible for calming the nervous system.

Three ways to set Powerful, High Vibration Intentions

Setting a high vibration intention attracts your deepest desires to you so you can live your dreams. Every thought you have is an intention. The more you repeat something to yourself, consciously or not, you are setting that vibration into reality. So what is a high vibration intention and how do you avoid sending out bad intentions? Let’s use the current state of affairs and the novel coronavirus to illustrate these key points.
Picture
In setting powerful high vibration intentions we must connect to our personal “gifts” so that we align our purpose with the outcomes we seek.

Set positive, affirmative intentions. The statement of, “I hope I don’t get sick” or “I hope Trump doesn’t get reelected” has a much lower vibration than, “I will stay healthy and strong” or “I believe our world will be led by competent, mindful leaders”. Positivity, gratitude and love vibrate so much higher than anger, revenge and all those other depleting emotions. Make sure you start your intention from a place of positivity and gratitude, especially when you’re challenged to do so (like right now!)

Focus on intentions that serve the greater good. Right now I desire, “May this virus suddenly disappear so people can get back to ‘normal’ and our business can reopen”. The basic need of what I want is for our business to be up and running again. The uncertainty of not knowing when we’ll be back up and running and IF we’ll get through all this is overwhelming at times.

However, that’s a pretty selfish intention with a very low-vibration as I’m only considering my needs. The Earth is finally getting a chance to breathe. People all over the world are creating, coming together, and slowing down. Wishing that things “get back to normal” may not be best for everyone. And there are so many people in similar or worse situations.

An intention "vibrates higher" when it's serving needs greater than our own. So how about, “I desire health and happiness for all”. This is certainly a higher vibration as my intention is not only about me but “for all”.

Set an intention that links your personal gifts to your dream of the greater good. “Health and happiness for all” sounds great. But this intention is quite broad and the associated vibration, while altruistic and good, can be easily dispersed as there’s nothing really “sticky” or personal about it.

In setting powerful high vibration intentions we must connect to our personal “gifts” so that we align our purpose with the outcomes we seek. Our gifts are what we can uniquely share with the world, i.e. art, music, science, teaching, etc.

So my powerful high vibration intention is then, “May I share wisdom, teachings and practices that enable humanity to connect within to evolve in harmony with nature”.

This revised intention ties my general intention to my gifts, i.e. my ability to connect people to themselves through yoga and meditation. And my intention for health and happiness is about humanity evolving to live with and, and in harmony with nature.

What about Bad Intentions? When you have a high vibration intention aligned with your purpose there are no “bad” intentions.

However, wishing harm upon another being – for whatever reason – is a bad intention. Wishing harm against something will only attract that harm to you. Moments of tremendous grief and despair can naturally spiral into anger and revenge and without realizing it we’re cursing the person or situation and sending out self-sabotaging intentions.

A regular mindfulness practice helps us realize and observe our thoughts. It’s natural to feel anger, want revenge when upset or even fantasize about someone else’s demise. But regularly practicing self-awareness helps us feel those emotions, and then release them.

Why don’t you take a shot at writing your own intention for right now.

Mindful Business Leader Series

Deep down we are all asking the same questions. What is my purpose? Am I on the right path? What is the point to all this? Whether it was during a hike or after a yoga class I’d often find myself diving deeper into conversation with our guests about the meaning and purpose of life.

Everyone was wondering...

Whether we run a small business, lead a team or make decisions that impact shareholders, we need to evolve as humans first, and then as business leaders. Too often we focus on never ending exponential financial growth and so much of our energy is spent on finding ways to succeed under this myopic lens. Growth for the sake of growth is by definition, cancer.

If we are to go home feeling good about ourselves, making a positive contribution to humanity during our lives, we must evolve as business leaders and take the the time to reflect, observe and grow. Where we put our focus and energy and what outcomes we seek will drive the kind of world we live in and leave behind.

In this series I share the MINUVIDA story, and more importantly relevant learnings for any business leader, whether you’re a founder of a small biz or running a segment of a multi-billion dollar company. At the end of each video I lead a guided meditation to help us connect with ourselves.

"Where we put our focus and energy and what outcomes we seek will drive the kind of world we live in and leave behind."

Eat, poop and be happy. The new metrics of success.

Picture
Typical day in the life of mindful business leader: Get a full 8 hours of sleep a night. Harvest ripe fruit from the trees and pick greens from the earth. Eat three wholesome meals a day (none of which are in front of a screen or in a to go container). Meditate and/ journal and practice yoga once a day. Spend more time outside in nature than inside. Live your soul’s purpose.

Does that sound like any of the successful business owners you know? Well it’s MY life.

What if I told you I’m making 1/10th of what I made in my high flying corporate job five years ago?

I’m grateful for my past life as a corporate exec. It enabled me to save and invest so I could live my soul’s purpose and run a lodge and retreat center in the Azores islands. Many of us spend our entire lives saving up for retirement, or maybe we have plans to do something big.

But somehow we forget what we’re striving for. We simply strive for more, bigger, better. But how much is enough?

Do you feel successful? What is your definition of success?

I now understand there are many definitions of success and mine is not just about profit margin and growth.
My definition of success
  1. Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. There is a plethora of research on this and if you’re not getting enough sleep (and no you’re not one of those people that only needs 5-6 hours) then WAKE UP!
  2. Eat three wholesome meals a day, none of which are in front of a screen. We need to be relaxed in order to digest and absorb nutrients to fuel our body and mind. If you’re stimulating yourself while eating (looking at your phone, watching TV or driving), you’re unable to properly absorb the food you’re eating.
  3. Have a good poop at least once a day. Your digestion is the first to go when you’re under chronic stress and stimulation. You need to be relaxed for your body to digest and absorb nutrients, and also function properly to eliminate waste. If you’re not pooping once a day look at where you’re overstressed and overstimulated. It’s not just about what you eat.
  4. Connect daily to my soul. I start each day with some form of “daily connection”. This can be meditation or yoga, singing, bollywood dancing (yep!) or just breathing. How do you know who you are and where you’re called to be if you don’t connect with yourself, and on a regular basis?
  5. Spend more time doing what I love and want to do vs. what I have to do. Are you in charge of your life or are you constantly reacting to demands placed on you? I choose where I exert my energy and time. You can’t be all things to all people so choose wisely. This has in turn given me more time to focus on my soul’s purpose.
  6. Directly impact the wellbeing of my community. When I’m successful it means our team and partners succeed, which leads to another exponential set of good things happening. Success breeds success, who does your success directly impact?
  7. Run a profitable business that enables me to do all of the above. And yes we run a profitable business. So, stay tuned for Part II…
